Thoracic surgery is any surgery that is performed on the organs and tissues in the chest cavity. General thoracic surgery primarily treats diseases of the lungs and esophagus

Why is thoracic surgery performed?

Thoracic surgery is most commonly performed on patients who have lung cancer, esophageal cancer, emphysema, and are in need of a lung transplant. Symptoms that may indicate the above problems are as follows:

  • Pain in the back, shoulders or throat
  • Chronic Coughing
  • Vomiting 
  • Coughing up blood
  • Discomfort of difficulty when swallowing
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Wheezing
